On December 12, 2019, 2947 “39 Service Battalion” RCACC (RCEME) conducted a change of Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) appointment.
Chief Warrant Officer Jonah Hu aged out of the cadet program, and Master Warrant Officer Timothy Chao has been appointed as the new senior cadet of the unit.
CWO Hu was a member of 2947 for six years, and is a graduate of the Drill and Ceremonial Instructor Course at Vernon CTC. He served three years as a Staff Cadet at Vernon, the last of which as Company Sergeant Major of Bravo Company, one of the most senior leadership positions in Western Canada.
MWO Chao has served five years with 2947. He completed the Fitness and Sports Instructor Course at Alberthead CTC in 2017. In the summer of 2019, MWO Chao and was one of a handful of cadets selected from across Canada to attend the prestigious Maple Leaf Exchange in the United Kingdom.
CWO Hu shared some parting words with the cadets –
I’ve been in cadets for six in a half years and when I first joined, I didn’t know anybody except for the one person that introduced me to cadets in the first place. I found my love for drill and all of my fondest memories came from it. Cadets has taught me valuable leadership skills and has helped me grow as a person. It has also allowed me to mature, increase my self confidence and my ability to interact with others. If I were to leave a message for all the junior cadets it would be, ‘Stick with it… stick with it. There will be times you will want to leave, but there are tons of opportunities in cadets that once you leave, you can’t be a part of. You will find purpose and want to stay.’
We thank CWO Hu for his years of dedicated service and leadership to 2947. Under his tenure as RSM, the Corps and its cadets amassed many awards, including the President’s Trophy for Best Army Cadet Corps in British Columbia. He plans to continue his education at the University of British Columbia, and to begin a military career as a RCEME soldier with 39 Service Battalion.
